Perpignan (Occitanie)
Perpignan - its region and its real estate
Located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in the Occitanie region, Perpignan enjoys a privileged geographical position, close to the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees and Spain. Nicknamed “la Catalane”, the city boasts a sunny climate 310 days a year, a rich historical heritage and an exceptional natural setting.
From the mid 13th to the mid 14th century, the Pyrénées-Orientales belonged to the Kingdom of Majorca, with Perpignan as its mainland capital. The territory subsequently became part of the Kingdom of Spain, before being ceded to France in 1659. However, the Catalan identity endured, giving rise to the nickname of Catalogne du Nord for the department. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the department underwent significant expansion thanks to wine-growing, the rolling paper industry and, finally, the development of tourism.
The Pyrénées-Orientales department boasts a remarkable wealth of heritage. Highlights include Perpignan, with its red-brick buildings and the Palais des Rois de Majorque, and Collioure, a magnificent fishing village that has inspired many artists and is the birthplace of Fauvism. There's also the Saint-Martin du Canigou abbey, the Tautavel prehistoric museum, the Vauban fortifications, the Mont-Louis site and much more.
Vineyards, beaches, lakes, arid landscapes, forests, mountains, etc., the département abounds in a variety of natural landscapes, making it a prime destination for outdoor leisure activities. What's more, with its 10 seaside resorts and 8 mountain resorts, the département delights water sports enthusiasts and winter sports fans alike. The region is also famous for its delicious gastronomy, with typical Catalan dishes, tapas and fine wines.
The region and its real estate market
In the luxury real estate market of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Perpignan and Collioure are the most popular destinations. The hinterland also offers a number of charming villages, such as Thuir, Castelnou, Céret and Sorède. The seaside resorts of Torreilles, Leucate, Argelès-sur-Mer and Saint-Cyprien are also highly sought-after.
Buyers are generally looking for prestigious second homes. The most sought-after properties are vineyard residences, contemporary villas, authentic mas, maisons de maître and waterfront properties.
